New Zealand’s cycle trails, for people who are not cyclists

Riders crossing a coastal Hawke’s Bay vineyard on a flat cycle trail

You do not need lycra for this chapter. Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail network, includes 23 Great Rides, and the best of them were built on old rail lines and river flats, which means gradients a postman would call gentle. Add the e-bike, which flattened whatever hills remained, and cycling here became what it should be: a way of moving through wine country and gold-rush valleys at the speed of actually seeing them.

The trails that suit normal people

  1. Otago Central Rail Trail: the original, 152 km of old railway through big-sky Central Otago, ridden over three to five days between country pubs and curling towns. Luggage transfers move your bags ahead each day; you carry a jacket and a camera.
  2. Hawke’s Bay Trails: flat limestone paths linking wineries, the coast and Napier’s deco streets. The best single-day wine ride in the country: see the Hawke’s Bay guide.
  3. Marlborough’s wine lanes from Renwick: not formally a Great Ride, just the easiest cellar-door touring on Earth: flat, short hops, tastings as trail stops.
  4. Queenstown Trails: the Gibbston River ride threads vineyards and the bungy bridge; e-bikes make the valley a half-day loop with pinot at the turnaround.
  5. Tasman’s Great Taste Trail: Nelson’s coast, orchards and breweries on easy grades, near Abel Tasman.
  6. West Coast Wilderness Trail: rainforest, old water races and glowworm side trips between Greymouth and Ross; the rainforest one for the unhurried.
  7. Lakeside classics: the Wanaka outlet track and Queenstown’s Frankton track are free, flat afternoon rides with world-class backdrops, no planning required.

How the logistics actually work

The multi-day trails run on a mature support system: bike hire (e-bikes everywhere now), shuttles to trailheads, nightly luggage transfers, and accommodation used to muddy shoes. You ride 30 to 50 easy kilometres a day and your bag beats you to the pub. Book the popular trails’ peak months (February to April, when Central Otago is golden and settled) ahead. Several of our self drive itineraries fold a trail day or two into a longer loop, which for most travellers is the right dose.

For a first trip, one day on the Lake Dunstan Trail or the Gibbston river ride is the right dose; the week on the Rail Trail is for the second visit.

A trail day, shaped

Collect the e-bikes in Cromwell at nine, ride the lake edge to Clyde by early afternoon with the coffee boat at the halfway point, lunch in Clyde’s stone lanes, and take the shuttle back with the bikes on the trailer. In Hawke’s Bay the same day runs from Napier along the coast to the cellar doors and back on the limestone paths. A trail day needs an e-bike, a booked shuttle, a bottle of water and nothing else; the operators have made the rest their problem. The self drive itineraries fold a day like this into most South Island loops.
