For travelers from the United States

New Zealand vacation packages from the USA

New Zealand is a long flight and worth every hour of it, provided the trip is planned right. This page has what American travellers actually need: every nonstop route and how long it takes, how the flipped seasons work in your favour, how many days to allow, and itineraries with accommodation, transport and activities arranged before you land. Prices show in US dollars, quotes are free, and a real person in New Zealand does the planning.

A record number of Americans are visiting New Zealand.

Arrivals from the United States are at all-time highs (Stats NZ, September 2025 year). Nonstop flights now leave from six US cities, and the secret is well and truly out: this is the long-haul trip Americans come home raving about.

Nonstop from 6 US cities

Los Angeles to Auckland is 12 hours 50 minutes nonstop. Board after dinner, sleep, land at breakfast. San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, New York and Honolulu also fly direct.

No visa, easy NZeTA

US citizens need no visa for visits up to 3 months. Request the NZeTA online before you fly; with the IVL visitor levy it comes to about NZ$120 (roughly US$75) per person.

Seasons are flipped

Your winter is our summer. Christmas in New Zealand means beaches, barbecues and daylight past 9pm, which is why December to February books out first.

Your US licence is valid

Drive on your US licence for the length of your vacation. We drive on the left; if you would rather not, guided itineraries put a professional driver-guide behind the wheel.

Across the date line

New Zealand is 16 to 21 hours ahead of the US. You lose a day flying out and get it back flying home, so a Friday departure lands Sunday morning.

Prices in USD

Every price on this site displays in US dollars, and paying by credit card carries Fair Credit Billing Act dispute rights.

Nonstop flights from the USA to New Zealand

Six US cities have nonstop service to Auckland, and San Francisco flies direct to Christchurch in summer, landing you in the South Island without a connection. Most seasonal routes run late October through March, which is exactly when you want to be here: that window is the New Zealand summer.

Westbound flights are overnight and cross the international date line, so you arrive two calendar days after departure; the day comes back on the way home. Chicago nonstops are currently paused, and one-stop connections run via Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas or via Sydney and Brisbane with Qantas. Schedules move seasonally, so check the airline for your dates. Checked October 2025.

When should Americans visit New Zealand?

Flip your calendar upside down and New Zealand starts making perfect sense. The best months line up with the northern winter, and the value months line up with times most Americans can actually travel.

December to February

NZ summer, your winter escape

Peak season: warmest weather, longest days, maximum flight capacity. This is the window Americans book 6 to 12 months ahead, especially for Christmas and New Year. If those are your dates, start early.

March to May

Fall, the insider window

Settled autumn weather, vineyards in harvest, Central Otago gold, and noticeably softer prices. Our pick for value and space if your dates are flexible.

June to August

NZ winter, your summer vacation

Summer break lines up with the New Zealand ski season and the green season everywhere else. Fewer nonstops fly (LAX and SFO continue year round), but prices on the ground are the lowest of the year outside the ski towns.

September to November

Spring, before the rush

Snowmelt waterfalls, spring lambs and shoulder prices. The seasonal nonstops resume in late October, which makes November one of the smartest months to arrive.
