How much does a New Zealand trip actually cost?

What a whole trip totals

• A good mid-range week for two, one island: roughly NZ$5,000 to $7,500 on the ground.

The levers that actually move the price

1. Season: the same trip costs 20 to 35 percent less in May, June or August than in the Christmas fortnight. Timing is the single biggest lever you control.
2. Nights per base: every extra one-night stop adds cleaning-fee-priced accommodation churn and fuel. Two-night bases are cheaper and better.
3. The car class: an intermediate does everything an SUV does on sealed roads, for hundreds less per fortnight.
4. Booking lead time: the good-value motels in Te Anau and Tekapo sell out first, leaving latecomers the expensive remainder. Early booking is a discount nobody labels as one.
5. Where NOT to save: travel insurance, the Milford overnight if you can reach it, and windscreen-cover on the rental. Ask anyone who has met a South Island gravel chip.

Money mechanics worth knowing

• Tipping is not expected anywhere. Prices include GST. What you see is what you pay, which quietly saves 15 to 20 percent versus North American mental math.
• Cards work everywhere including tiny cafes; carrying more than NZ$100 cash is nostalgia. Watch card foreign-transaction fees instead.
• Fuel runs NZ$2.60 to $3.00 a litre and remote-area premiums are real: fill before the famous gaps.
