Campervan or car in New Zealand? Run the real numbers
The campervan dream is real: waking up lakeside with the kettle on is a genuine New Zealand experience. So is paying more than motels would have cost to sleep worse and drive slower. Which one you get depends on maths and temperament, so here is both, without the rental-industry gloss.
The money, plainly
In summer, a mid-size self-contained van runs NZ$180 to $350 a day before insurance reductions, plus $40 to $60 nightly for powered sites most nights (the freedom camping fantasy is a part-time reality, below), plus roughly a third more fuel than a car. A car plus decent motels typically lands at a similar or lower total for two people, and the motel bed is a queen that nobody has to fold away. Vans win the maths mainly in shoulder seasons, for three-plus travellers, or when van relocation deals appear.

The rules that changed the game
Freedom camping is legal only in permitted areas and, almost everywhere that matters, only for certified self-contained vehicles; councils enforce with $400 fines and the rules tightened again under the 2023 self-contained law changes. The official camping map shows what is actually allowed where. Practical translation: budget for real campgrounds most nights and treat the free lakeside night as an occasional prize, not the plan.
Temperament test
- Choose the van if: the van IS the holiday for you, you are travelling October to April, you are happy re-parking your kitchen daily, and spontaneous beach mornings beat long dinners.
- Choose car and motels if: you want real beds, hot showers without tokens, room to spread out after big days, and the freedom to pick restaurants over dish-washing.
- The quiet third option most guests end up loving: car plus a route of hand-picked motels and lodges booked ahead, which is literally what our self-drive packages are, with the itinerary logic already argued about by people who do this daily.
What the forums say
The question arrives on the New Zealand travel subreddit most weeks, usually as "is self driving the best way", and the thread Google ranks first for it is a British couple with a fortnight and a Lord of the Rings list. For two people in summer the totals land in the same place, and the motel has a bed nobody folds away. The van wins only when the site by the surf is the point, or when a relocation deal drops the vehicle line to almost nothing.
