How many days do you actually need in New Zealand?

The unhelpful answer is "as many as you can". The helpful one: New Zealand is two islands totalling the length of Britain, joined by a three and a half hour ferry, with the things worth seeing spread across all of it. Seven days does one region well. Ten does one island. Fourteen does both islands, or one island in depth. Twenty-one does the country with rest days. Here is what each length really buys, based on the itineraries we build every week, including the ones we talk people out of.
Every route we publish is gathered by length and island on the itineraries page, so once the number is settled the plan is one click away.
The ladder
| Days | What it delivers | What it cannot |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 6 | One region done well: Queenstown and Fiordland, or Auckland with Rotorua and Hobbiton | Both islands. Anyone who says otherwise is selling flights |
| 7 to 9 | One island’s greatest hits as a loop | The other island, without wrecking the pace |
| 10 to 13 | One island deeply, or both islands with discipline and a flight between | Both islands plus the slow moments that make the trip |
| 14 to 17 | The classic both-islands journey with two-night bases and weather slack | The far corners: the top of Northland, the Catlins, East Cape |
| 18 to 24 | Everything above plus the corners, at a pace with actual holiday in it | Very little. This is the trip people write to us about years later |
Each rung has a page: 7 days, 10 days, two weeks and three weeks.
The arithmetic nobody prints
Start with your day count. Subtract the arrival day, because you will be jet-lagged into next week, the departure day, and one logistics day per island change. A "ten day trip" is seven touring days. Divide the kilometres by those, not by the calendar. This one sum explains most of the disappointing itineraries we get asked to rescue.
The second number that matters is 70. That is roughly the kilometres per hour you will actually average on rural highways once photo stops, one-lane bridges and the alpaca farm cafe are priced in. The 500 kilometre day that looked fine at home is a seven hour sentence here. The NZTA journey planner gives live times and closures; add a third to whatever it says.

What people with each length actually book
Where you are flying from decides more than most people expect. Australians, who now arrive in record numbers, take the week most often: a three hour flight, no jet lag, and Queenstown or Auckland in and out. Americans, also at a record, mostly book ten to fourteen days and fly one way. British visitors, still below their 2019 numbers, stay longest, and three weeks is the trip they end up taking.
- One week and you love mountains: fly Queenstown return and run the southern lakes week.
- One week and you love culture and coastlines: Auckland return with the North Island spine.
- Ten days: one island. The South Island loop for the glaciers and the fiord, the North Island route for beaches, steam and the volcano.
- Two weeks: the fortnight we would book ourselves, or the South Island circle.
- Three weeks or more: both islands plus your choice of corners. The 21 day route is the best-reviewed trip we run.
The question the forums ask most
Can you do both islands in ten days. It is the question that fills the New Zealand travel subreddit and our inbox alike, and the reply Google pulls out of that thread is the one we give.
10 days I would just pick one island and explore as much as you can there. This itinerary is super full.
r/newzealand_travel, 10 Day Trip to New Zealand
The exception is the flight. Auckland to Queenstown takes an hour and 55 minutes and there are more than fifteen a day, so ten days can be three in the North, a flight, and six in the South, if you accept that the Coromandel, Northland and the Catlins wait for next time. It is a busier trip than either island alone, and we build it for people who know they will not be back.
When the days are set, the packages
The New Zealand Explorer is the disciplined ten day both-islands coach trip from Auckland to Queenstown; Grand New Zealand is 23 days as a self drive; and The Ultimate North and South is the month-long version for people whose leave allowance lost the fight. All of them adjust before you book.
