The North Island itinerary: 7, 10 and 12 days, day by day

The North Island is where New Zealand actually lives: three quarters of the population, the capital, the biggest city, and the volcanic, geothermal, beach-fringed landscape that visitors underrate before they arrive and talk about afterwards. It rewards a different rhythm from the South: shorter drives, more culture, more swimming, and one big walk with a weather day beside it.
Almost every good North Island trip is a variation of one spine, and this page lays that spine out at seven, ten and twelve days. The ten day version, Auckland to Wellington with the Tongariro weather day built in, has its own day-by-day page.
The spine, and the legs that make it up
Auckland north to the Bay of Islands, back south via the Coromandel or straight to Rotorua and Taupo, then over the volcanic plateau to Wellington. North first matters: it front-loads the beaches and leaves the ferry-or-flight decision for the end. Every leg is under five hours, and only one is over three.
| Leg | Plan for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland to Paihia | 3 h 30 | Leave after 9am to miss the city; stop at the Hundertwasser toilets in Kawakawa, genuinely |
| Paihia to Hahei (Coromandel) | 5 h | The long day of the trip; break it at the Matakana markets on a Saturday |
| Hahei to Rotorua via Matamata | 3 h | Cathedral Cove in the morning, Hobbiton on the way, Rotorua by evening |
| Rotorua to Taupo | 1 h | Wai-O-Tapu sits between them |
| Taupo to National Park Village | 1 h 30 | The base for the Tongariro Crossing |
| National Park to Wellington | 4 h | The Desert Road closes in snow; Whanganui is the alternative |
Seven days: Auckland, the Bay and Rotorua
A week stays north of Taupo and flies Auckland in and out. Two nights in Auckland, two in the Bay of Islands for Waitangi and a day on the water, then south through Hobbiton to two nights in Rotorua, and a last night back in Auckland or at the airport. Warmer, gentler and cheaper flights from most of Asia than the southern week, and in summer the beaches the South cannot match.
In a week, choose the Bay of Islands over the Coromandel. The Bay has the history and the boats; the Coromandel has the two famous beaches. First-time visitors with one slot get more from the Bay, and the Coromandel returns in the ten day version.

Ten days: Auckland to Wellington
- Days 1 and 2, Auckland: land, recover, the ferry to Waiheke or the gannets at Muriwai.
- Days 3 and 4, Bay of Islands: the Hole in the Rock cruise and the Treaty Grounds.
- Day 5, the long leg south to the Coromandel, with brunch at Matakana.
- Day 6, Hahei: Cathedral Cove by boat or on the rebuilt track, and Hot Water Beach two hours either side of low tide with a spade from the cafe.
- Days 7 and 8, Rotorua via Hobbiton: geothermal valley by day, a hangi and concert by night. Give Rotorua its two nights; it is the cultural heart of the trip.
- Day 9, Taupo, Huka Falls and the volcanic plateau to National Park Village.
- Day 10, Wellington via the Desert Road: Te Papa, the cable car, and a flight out. Or add a night and walk the Crossing on day ten.
Twelve days: add Hawke’s Bay, or add the Crossing properly
Two extra days go one of two ways. East, to Napier and Hawke’s Bay for the art deco streets, the gannets at Cape Kidnappers and syrah worth the detour, which sits neatly between Taupo and Wellington. Or into the mountain: two nights at National Park Village so the Tongariro Alpine Crossing gets the spare day it demands. The Crossing is 19 kilometres and seven to eight hours over an active volcano, and the shuttle operators close it for wind often enough that a single-night plan fails about one trip in four.

Add-ons and skips
- Add Hobbiton between the Coromandel and Rotorua if the films mean anything to you. It is two hours from Hahei, and since December 2023 every tour goes inside a hobbit hole.
- Add Waitangi to any version. Adult international admission rises to $78 from 1 October 2026 and includes the guided tour, the cultural performance and both museums; the Treaty Grounds site has the current prices.
- Skip Hamilton without guilt, unless the Hamilton Gardens are your thing, in which case one coffee stop covers it.
- Skip the Crossing without shame if you are not equipped or the forecast is dirty. The Whakapapa short walks give you the same volcano from below.
What the forums say
The North Island thread Google ranks first on the New Zealand travel subreddit opens with a plan to land in Auckland and drive straight to Rotorua, and we see the same plan in our inbox weekly. Three hours on the wrong side of the road after a long-haul flight is how the first day gets lost. Both versions above sleep in Auckland first.
Day 1: Land in Auckland and drive directly to Rotorua. Day 2 and 3: Te Puia, Waimangu, Waiotapu, Whakarewarewa Forest.
