Three weeks in New Zealand: the itinerary that earns the airfare

Week one: the North Island arc

1. Days 1 to 2, Auckland. Land, walk the harbour, the ferry to Waiheke or a climb up Rangitoto while the jet lag burns off. The Auckland guide is exactly this.
2. Days 3 to 4, Bay of Islands. North for Waitangi and a day on the water. Subtropical, easy, the holiday properly begun; the Bay guide has the boats.
3. Days 5 to 7, Rotorua via Hobbiton and Waitomo. The classic corridor south with the caves and the Shire on the way, then two Rotorua nights for a geothermal park, the Redwoods and a Maori cultural evening.

Week two: volcanoes, the capital, the crossing

1. Days 8 to 9, Taupo and Tongariro. The lake, Huka Falls, and the Alpine Crossing with the spare day the weather demands.
2. Days 10 to 11, Wellington. Te Papa, Zealandia, one great dinner. The capital guide has the shortlist.
3. Day 12, the Cook Strait ferry and Marlborough. The crossing is a scenic cruise in its own right, and a Blenheim or Picton night puts sauvignon country at your table by evening.
4. Days 13 to 14, Kaikoura and Christchurch. Whales in the morning, the coast road south, and the rebuilt city’s food halls by night.

Week three: the South Island crescendo

1. Days 15 to 16, Tekapo and Aoraki Mount Cook. The turquoise lakes, the Hooker Valley at dawn on the new bridge, stars in the dark sky reserve at night.
2. Days 17 to 18, Queenstown via the Lindis. Settle into the adventure capital, or trade a night to Wanaka for the quieter version of the same mountains.
3. Days 19 to 20, Fiordland. Te Anau base, the Milford road done slowly, the cruise, and the spare morning that makes weather irrelevant. The day trip or overnight question deserves ten minutes before you decide.
4. Day 21, Queenstown depart. Gondola breakfast, fly out. You will already be planning the return; everyone is.

What three weeks costs, and where it goes
