Wanaka on its own terms, not as Queenstown’s quiet cousin

The ten

1. Roys Peak, plainly: 5 to 6 hours return, 1,200 vertical metres of switchbacks with no shade, to the most photographed ridgeline view in the country. It earns its fame and its queue at the photo ledge. Start pre-dawn in summer, carry real water, and skip it in bad cloud; the view is the entire point. Closed for lambing roughly early October to mid November.
2. Rob Roy Glacier Track: our actual favourite. An hour’s gravel drive up the Matukituki Valley, then 3 to 4 hours return through beech forest to waterfalls pouring off a hanging glacier. Wilder than Roys Peak, quieter, and more interesting underfoot.
3. The lake itself: swim from Eely Point, hire a kayak or paddleboard, or just take the lakefront path at golden hour. Wanaka’s lake is for using, not just photographing.
4. That Wanaka Tree: the willow in the lake, twenty minutes’ walk from town. Dawn is the photograph; any other hour is a tree in a lake with a crowd. Go early or go past.
5. The via ferrata: guided climbing on cabled cliffs above the valley, including a wire bridge walk with Lake Wanaka behind you. The rare adrenaline activity that beginners genuinely can do.
6. Skydive or scenic flight over Mount Aspiring: on a clear day this airspace, alps one side, lakes the other, is as good as New Zealand flying gets.
7. Cardrona and Treble Cone in winter: Cardrona for families and wide groomers, Treble Cone for terrain and the lake view from the lift. Our ski packages run both valleys.
8. Rippon and the Wanaka wineries: pinot noir tasted from a lawn above the lake at Rippon, no charge for the view that has sold a thousand bottles.
9. Cinema Paradiso and town time: couches, an intermission with fresh cookies, and the town’s easy evening pace. Wanaka nightlife is a good dinner, and that is the appeal.
10. Puzzling World: leaning towers and illusion rooms on the way into town. Unashamedly for kids, quietly enjoyed by everyone.

How long, and when

Two nights is the working minimum: one big walk day, one lake and wineries day. Autumn (April) turns the poplars gold and is the town’s best month; mid winter belongs to the ski fields; summer is peak lake life. Wanaka slots into any South Island loop an hour over the Crown Range from Queenstown, and the drive itself, New Zealand’s highest sealed road, is a highlight.

Getting there and around

Wanaka is an hour from Queenstown airport over the Crown Range, or an hour and a half round by the Kawarau Gorge when the pass is closed or chains are required, which happens a few days each winter. From Christchurch it is five and a half hours by Tekapo and the Lindis. In town nothing needs a car: the lakefront, the outlet track and Rippon are all on the bike paths, and the mountain shuttles run to Cardrona and Treble Cone in season. Collect a car for the valleys and the road on; the town itself is walked.
