Decisions
Queenstown or Wanaka: which base suits you?

An hour apart over the Crown Range sit two lake towns having very different parties. Queenstown is the amplifier: bungy, jet boats, nightlife, a gondola over the lot. Wanaka is the acoustic set: same mountains, same lake-town DNA, half the volume. Most visitors should see both. Where you sleep more nights is the real question.
The character difference in one day each
A Queenstown day: coffee on the lakefront among six languages, the Shotover jet or the Kawarau bungy (the world’s first commercial site, still running since 1988), gondola dinner, cocktail bars until late. A Wanaka day: the Roys Peak dawn climb or a lazy lakefront breakfast, kayak or bike the outlet track, that famous lone tree at dusk, one excellent dinner, stars. Both are superb. They are not interchangeable.
| Queenstown | Wanaka | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Resort buzz, international crowd | Small town calm, local feel |
| Adrenaline | The world capital: bungy, swing, jet, raft | Skydive and via ferrata, then it relaxes |
| Dining and nightlife | Deep bench, goes late | Short and excellent, ends by 11 |
| Ski access | Coronet Peak 25 min, Remarkables 45 | Cardrona 35 min, Treble Cone 30 |
| Prices | Highest in the South Island | A notch gentler, especially dining |
| Airport | Direct Australian and NZ flights | Via Queenstown, one hour away |
The difference shows at seven in the evening. Queenstown’s lakefront at that hour is six languages, a queue for a burger and a bar deciding the night; Wanaka’s is a family on the grass, a paddleboarder coming in, and the light on the Buchanan Peaks. Neither is wrong. One is a town that entertains you and the other is a town that leaves you alone with the view, and most people know within a day which they came for.
Our actual recommendations
- First trip, big itinerary: two nights each, Wanaka first. Arriving in Queenstown after Wanaka feels like a crescendo; the reverse feels like decompression.
- Honeymooners and photographers: weight Wanaka. The mornings are the point.
- Ski trips: pick by mountain. Cardrona loyalists and families base Wanaka; Coronet dawn-groomer chasers base Queenstown. Our ski packages run both.
- Non-negotiable nightlife: Queenstown, no debate.
What changed on both sides of the range
Queenstown’s side of the ledger is the airport: direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and more than fifteen a day from Auckland, which is why a week that starts in Wanaka still lands in Queenstown. And from winter 2026 the district council fines $750 for driving the Crown Range without chains when the sign requires them, so the hour between the towns is a real decision in July.

The split that works
| Trip | Queenstown nights | Wanaka nights |
|---|---|---|
| A week from Australia | 2, at the end | 2, in the middle |
| The 10 day South Island loop | 2 | 1, or 2 on the Queenstown start |
| A ski week | All, for Coronet and the Remarkables | All, for Cardrona and Treble Cone |
| A honeymoon | 1, for the dinner | 3, for the mornings |
Wanaka first, Queenstown last, and never a night in each on consecutive days. The 7 day South Island week runs exactly that shape.
A day in each, timed
- Queenstown, 8am: coffee on the lakefront. 9am: the Shotover Jet while the canyon light is good. Midday: Arrowtown for lunch and the gold-rush lanes, twenty minutes away. 3pm: the gondola. 6pm: a Ferg on the foreshore wall or a wine at Gibbston. 9pm: the bars, if that is the point.
- Wanaka, 5.30am: Roys Peak, three hours up and two down, or the Rob Roy Glacier walk up the Matukituki if the lambing closure is on. Midday: the lakefront, a swim in summer. 3pm: the outlet track by bike, or nothing. 6pm: That Wanaka Tree at dusk. 8pm: one good dinner. 10pm: the stars, because there is no light to spoil them.
The Queenstown day is a list; the Wanaka day is a rhythm. Most people want one of each, and the order that works is Wanaka first, so the trip builds rather than decompresses.
