Auckland: what to do with 48 hours before you fly south

Here is the local position: Auckland is not the reason you flew to New Zealand, but it is a genuinely good two days, and almost everyone lands here. The city sits on a volcanic field between two harbours, which means the best of it is water and cones: an island vineyard lunch, a volcano climb, black sand surf beaches within an hour. Do those, skip the souvenir mile, and fly south happy.
Day one: the harbour
- Waiheke Island: the 40 minute ferry is the best value scenic cruise in Auckland, and the island on the other end has 20+ vineyards, olive groves and beaches. Lunch at a vineyard restaurant, a swim at Oneroa, ferry home. This is our single top pick for a first day.
- Rangitoto: the youngest volcano in the field, about 600 years old, a symmetrical cone you can ferry to and summit in an hour each way over lava fields. No shops, no water taps to rely on; carry your own.
- The Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter for dinner: the harbour end of downtown earns its keep in the evening.

Day two: cones, culture, coast
- Auckland War Memorial Museum: the Maori and Pacific collections on the ground floor are the best single introduction to the culture you will meet for the rest of the trip. Give it two hours before you leave the city.
- Mount Eden or One Tree Hill: summit craters, 360 degree views, free. Go early with coffee.
- Devonport: a 12 minute ferry to a Victorian village with two small volcanoes and a naval history. A gentle half day.
- The west coast: Piha’s black sand and Lion Rock, or the Waitakere Ranges rainforest, 40 minutes from downtown and a different planet. Check track status before you go; some Waitakere trails close to protect kauri trees from dieback disease.
- Tiritiri Matangi: for bird people, one of the world’s great accessible sanctuary islands. Takahe, kokako and saddleback in wild forest, 75 minutes by ferry. Book ahead, it sells out.
What to skip
- The Sky Tower observation deck if you are climbing Mount Eden anyway; the volcano view is better and free. (The SkyJump is a different argument and a fair one.)
- Queen Street shopping. It is a main street. You have one at home.
- A third night, unless Tiritiri or a Waiheke sleepover is calling. The South Island is waiting, and your itinerary will thank you for the day back.
Practical notes
Almost every international flight lands here, and most of our itineraries start with an Auckland night to absorb the arrival. Ferries to Waiheke, Devonport and Rangitoto all leave from the downtown terminal, an easy walk from the main hotels. If you are heading north to the Bay of Islands or south to Rotorua, pick up the rental car on the way out of the city rather than paying to park it downtown while you ride ferries.

Two days, timed
- Day one, morning: the 9am ferry to Waiheke, a vineyard lunch, a swim at Oneroa, the 4pm ferry home. Evening: Wynyard Quarter.
- Day two, dawn: Mount Eden with a coffee. Mid morning: the War Memorial Museum for two hours. Afternoon: Piha and the Waitakere Ranges, or Devonport by ferry if the car is not collected yet. Evening: the flight south, or an early night before the drive.
Collect the rental car on the way out of the city, not on the way in. Two days of ferries and volcanoes need no car, and downtown parking is the most expensive thing in Auckland.
