The date line, demystified

Flying west across the Pacific you cross the international date line and lose a calendar day: leave Los Angeles on Friday evening, land in Auckland on Sunday morning. Nothing was stolen; the day comes back on the return leg, when you routinely land in America before you took off in New Zealand. Practical upshot: when booking hotels, count nights on the calendar, not in your head. It is the most common itinerary error we quietly fix.

Arriving functional

• The Pacific nonstops are overnight in both directions and land in the morning: eat, then sleep as much of the flight as you can manage.
• On landing, stay outside and awake until local night. New Zealand daylight is the free jet lag cure, and a first-day harbour walk beats a first-day nap every time.
• From Europe, consider two nights somewhere at the stopover city on one leg: it converts the world’s longest journey into two medium ones.

Which airport to land at

Auckland takes every long-haul route and most of the trans-Tasman ones. Christchurch has direct flights from Australia, Singapore, and from December 2026 Tokyo, and it is the right arrival for a South Island trip from Asia. Queenstown takes Australian flights only, and it is the right arrival for a South Island week from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or the Gold Coast. For anything longer than a week, fly into one city and out of another, and let the car go one way between them.
