What to pack for New Zealand (and what to leave home)

New Zealand weather is not extreme; it is indecisive. The same afternoon can hand you beach sun, alpine wind and sideways drizzle, sometimes from the same car park. The packing answer is not more clothes, it is the layers system every local dresses by, plus a short list of season extras. Here it is, argued item by item.
The core system, any season
- Three layers beat one parka: a merino or synthetic base, a warm mid-layer (fleece or light down), and a genuinely waterproof shell. New Zealand invented modern merino outdoorwear for this exact climate; it works.
- One pair of walked-in walking shoes or light hikers: every good day here ends with an hour’s track in it.
- Sun protection at strength: UV levels are up to 40 percent harsher than comparable northern latitudes, a legacy of clear air and ozone history. SPF50, hat, sunglasses, all seasons, and yes, you can burn in winter snow.
- Swimwear year round: if not for the sea, then for the hot pools your itinerary will inevitably meet.
- A day pack that fits the shell, water and camera: the useful souvenir shops sell is the one you brought.
Season add-ons
| Season | Add | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Dec to Feb) | Sandals, a second swimsuit, insect repellent for sandflies on the West Coast and Fiordland | Heavy jacket: the shell plus mid-layer covers alpine evenings |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Warm hat and gloves from April, one smart-warm dinner layer | Umbrella: the wind laughs at them, hoods win |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Proper insulated jacket, thermal leggings, grippy footwear for frosty mornings | Ski wear if skiing: rent it all at the fields for less than airline excess |
| Spring (Sep to Nov) | Everything mid-weight; this is peak four-seasons-daily | Nothing: spring uses the whole bag |
| Season | Add to the core | Leave at home |
|---|---|---|
| Summer, December to February | A second swimsuit, a sun hat with a brim, sandals for the beach, and repellent for the West Coast | The heavy coat |
| Autumn, March to May | A warm hat and gloves for the high country from April, and walking shoes rather than sandals | Nothing; this is the easiest season to pack for |
| Winter, June to August | An insulated jacket, thermals, gloves, a beanie, and boots that grip on ice for the southern towns | The umbrella; the wind owns it |
| Spring, September to November | Everything from the core plus the winter layer in the south; four seasons in a day is the rule, not the exception | Optimism about the forecast |

Power, plugs and the boring essentials
- Plugs are type I (the slanted three-pin shared with Australia), 230 volts. One adapter plus a USB multi-charger beats four adapters.
- Travel insurance documents, and insurance itself taken out the day you pay your deposit, as our money protection guide explains.
- Any prescription meds in original packaging with a copy of the script: NZ customs is friendly and thorough, in that order.
- Do not pack: hiking boots you bought last week (blisters love new boots), umbrellas, or any food. Biosecurity fines for undeclared fruit or honey start at NZ$400 and they mean it.
The bag itself
One medium suitcase or duffel per person, and no more, because it goes in and out of a car boot every second day and up motel stairs every night. Soft-sided bags fit a compact car’s boot in ways hard cases do not, and a fortnight of layers packs smaller than a week of outfits. If the bag would not fit under an aircraft seat with the shell and boots worn, it is too big for a New Zealand road trip. Laundry is easy: every motel has a machine, and most holiday parks and lodges too, so a week of clothes covers three.
