NZeTA, visas and entry requirements, explained once

For most visitors the paperwork comes down to one thing: the NZeTA, an electronic travel authority requested online before you fly. Citizens of visa waiver countries including the USA, UK, Canada, most of Europe, Japan and Singapore need it; Australian citizens are the notable exception and need nothing beyond a passport. Here is the whole checklist, with the traps that actually catch people.
The checklist
- Passport: valid at least three months beyond your departure date. Airlines check this at check-in, which is the worst possible place to discover a problem.
- NZeTA: request it via the official Immigration New Zealand app or website. Most requests are approved within hours, but the official advice is to allow up to 72 hours, and we tell guests to do it the week they book flights. It is valid for two years and multiple visits.
- IVL: the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is collected with the NZeTA request; together they come to about NZ$117 through the official app or $123 on the website. The levy funds conservation and tourism infrastructure, which, given what you are coming to see, is fair enough.
- Onward ticket and funds: technically required, occasionally checked at check-in. A return or onward booking satisfies it.
- The traveller declaration: a digital arrival declaration completed in the days before you fly, covering the biosecurity questions below.

Biosecurity: the part New Zealand is deadly serious about
New Zealand’s economy and ecosystems run on keeping pests out, and the border treats a forgotten apple like contraband because, biologically, it is. Declare all food, plants, animal products and outdoor equipment; clean your hiking boots and tent pegs before you fly (or declare them for inspection, which is quick and friendly); and when in doubt, tick yes. Declaring costs nothing and inspections are fast. Failing to declare earns an instant NZ$400 fine, issued without sympathy to tired people at 6am, and it is the single most common bad start to a New Zealand holiday. Bin the flight snacks before the arrival hall.
Who needs what, quickly
| Traveller | Needs |
|---|---|
| Australian citizens | Passport only: no visa, no NZeTA |
| USA, UK, Canada, EU, Japan, Singapore citizens (visa waiver list) | NZeTA + IVL before flying; stay up to 3 months (6 for UK) |
| Australian permanent residents (non-citizens) | NZeTA (no IVL) |
| Most other nationalities | Visitor visa in advance: check the official site early, processing takes longer than an NZeTA |
| Cruise passengers | NZeTA + IVL, same as air arrivals |
Full market-specific detail lives on our pages for travellers from Australia, the USA and the UK, including flight routes and seasonal advice.
Whatever the passport, the passport itself is the one document airlines refuse boarding over: three months of validity beyond the departure date, checked at the counter, with no appeal.
By passport, in one table
| Passport | Before you fly | Levy |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | Passport only; no NZeTA | Exempt |
| United Kingdom and most of Europe | NZeTA, valid two years, visits up to six months for the UK | NZ$100 with the NZeTA |
| United States and Canada | NZeTA, visits up to three months | NZ$100 with the NZeTA |
| Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia | NZeTA, visits up to three months | NZ$100 with the NZeTA |
| China, India and most other countries | A visitor visa applied for in advance | NZ$100 with the visa |
Apply on the official Immigration New Zealand site or app and nowhere else. The unofficial sites that rank in the search ads charge two or three times the fee for the same form.
