Seven days in New Zealand: pick one island, do it justice
Seven days is the classic trans-Tasman escape and the tightest itinerary we will design. The rule is regional: not one island this time, one region. Fly into its airport, hold two bases, and let one great area show off rather than sampling three shallowly. For most people that region is the southern lakes and Fiordland; here is that week, then the northern alternative.

From Australia, the southern week wins on arithmetic alone. Queenstown is three hours from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on direct flights, there is no jet lag, and the week starts on the lakefront the same afternoon.
The southern week
- Day 1, land in Queenstown: the gondola up, a lakefront dinner.
- Day 2, Queenstown: Glenorchy in the morning, then the adventure menu or the vineyard one; the local ranking sorts the worth-its from the queues.
- Days 3 to 4, Te Anau and Milford Sound: drive the great road slowly, cruise the fiord, keep the spare morning. The overnight cruise question is worth deciding before you book.
- Days 5 to 6, Wanaka: over the Crown Range for the calmer lake, a walk, a long lunch. The Wanaka guide has both.
- Day 7, depart Queenstown: an hour back over the pass, fly out.
The northern week
Fly into Auckland: two nights and a harbour day, then Rotorua via Hobbiton for geothermal country and a Maori cultural evening, Taupo for the lake and the falls, and back. Warmer, cheaper flights from most of Asia, and in summer the beach factor the south cannot match. The Bay of Islands swaps in for Taupo in beach season, with Waitangi as the reason.

The winter version
From June to September the southern week becomes a ski week with the same bases: Queenstown for Coronet Peak and the Remarkables, Wanaka for Cardrona and Treble Cone, and Te Anau stays in if the Milford road is open, which outside a storm it usually is. The ski season guide compares the fields, and the winter packages bundle passes and transfers so the car never has to go up a mountain road.
What a week cannot do
- Both islands. The ferry alone would eat a seventh of the trip.
- Milford and the glaciers and Mount Cook. Pick the fiord; the others seed the return trip.
- A different bed every night. Even in one region, the two-base rule is what makes seven days feel like a holiday instead of a scavenger hunt.
The Milford Sound Spectacular is a week from Christchurch for people who cannot fly into Queenstown, the Fiordland Escape is the southern week with lodges, and the Southern Lakes and TranzAlpine Circuit is the short version with the train.
