When to go
New Zealand in March: summer without the crowds
March is the month we point people at when they ask for summer without the queue. The sea is still warm, the days are still long, the weather is at its most settled, and the campervans have gone home. Central Otago begins to turn gold in the last week. If February is the best fortnight, March is the best whole month.

March has the most settled weather of the year and the fewest people in it. The anticyclones that arrive in late February tend to sit over the country for a week at a time, which is what a Fiordland trip wants, and the school holidays are two months either side.
The dates that matter in 2027
- Ironman New Zealand in Taupo on 6 March, which fills the town and closes lakefront roads for the day.
- WOMAD Aotearoa at the Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth from 12 to 14 March, back after a rest year in 2026, with children aged 15 and under free.
- The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival on Saturday 13 March, the West Coast’s one big weekend, when every bed between Greymouth and Franz Josef goes.
- Pasifika Festival in Auckland on 13 and 14 March, the largest Pacific cultural festival anywhere and free to walk into.
- Easter early, from Good Friday 26 March to Easter Monday 29 March, which pulls the usual April rush into the last week of March.
Where March is best
- Fiordland, with the best odds of a clear Milford day of any month and the road quiet by mid morning.
- The wine regions at harvest. Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay pick in March; Central Otago follows in April. Cellar doors are busy with fruit and happy about it.
- Central Otago from the third week, as the poplars along the lakes and the vines around Cromwell begin to turn.
- The Coromandel and Northland, still warm enough to swim and no longer full.
Planning notes
Book the Wildfoods and WOMAD weekends months out and everything else a few weeks out. The Great Walks are in their final full month before the booked season ends on 30 April, and the Coastal Pacific runs until the end of April, so a March trip can take the train along the Kaikoura coast rather than driving it. Pack for warm days and cool evenings; by the end of the month the high country is under ten degrees at night.
The Essential Southern Extravaganza is three weeks on the South Island at the pace March allows; the Southern Wines and Southern Scenes ten days is built around harvest; and Grand New Zealand does both islands over 23 days while the weather holds.
Where to be in March
The two ends of the South Island are the March picks. Fiordland has its best odds of a clear week, and the Milford road is quiet again by mid morning. The top of the island, Nelson, Abel Tasman and the Marlborough Sounds, holds its summer warmth into April and has the cellar doors at harvest. In the North Island, the Coromandel and Northland are still swimmable and no longer full, and Hawke’s Bay is picking. The one place to route around is Taupo on Ironman weekend and Hokitika on Wildfoods weekend, when the towns are booked out months ahead.
