Queenstown in winter: the ski season, and the town beneath it
Queenstown in winter is a resort town at 310 metres with its ski fields between 1,200 and 1,900, which means snow on the mountains you can see from breakfast and almost none on the streets you walk to get there. The season runs from the second week of June to October, the town is at its liveliest in July and August, and a good share of the people in it never ski. This is the winter for both halves.
For the skiers

For everyone else
- Milford Sound in winter, when the road is open: snow to the water, waterfalls frozen at the edges, and half the boats. Two nights in Te Anau, because the road closes for avalanche control after storms.
- The Onsen and the other hot pools above the Shotover, best at dusk with snow on the Remarkables.
- Glenorchy and Arrowtown under snow, both 45 minutes away and both quiet in winter.
- The gondola, the wineries at Gibbston with fires lit, and the town’s restaurants, which winter is the best season for.
- Snow Fest, the revived Winter Festival, over King’s Birthday weekend at the start of June, with fireworks over the lake.
The practicalities
Snow on the town’s streets happens a few times a winter and melts by lunch. The mountain roads are the real thing: the Remarkables road is steep and unsealed, Coronet’s is steep and sealed, both require chains after snow, and the ski field shuttles from town are the sensible answer. The Crown Range to Wanaka is the district’s most exposed road, and from winter 2026 Queenstown Lakes District Council fines $750 for failing to fit chains where the sign says so.
Matariki, the midwinter public holiday, falls on 10 July in 2026 and 25 June in 2027, and the dark sky over the Wakatipu is at its best that weekend. Sunset is before five in June and past six by the end of August.

What to pack for a Queenstown winter
Two climates in one bag. On the mountain, minus five at the first lift and a wind chill below that; on the lakefront by afternoon, ten degrees and sun. A warm base, an insulated mid-layer and a windproof shell cover both, with gloves and a warm hat for the morning. Boots that grip on ice for the town’s footpaths on the frosty mornings, and a swimsuit for the hot pools. The ski rental shops in town hire everything from jackets to helmets, so a visitor with a suitcase built for summer can still ski the next day. Sunscreen is not optional on the mountain; the snow doubles the UV.
