Christmas in New Zealand: what actually happens
Christmas in New Zealand is midsummer: barbecues, beaches, the pohutukawa in crimson flower along the northern coasts, and the longest days of the year. It is also the start of the six-week national holiday, and the one day of the year when the country closes. A visitor who knows both halves has a wonderful fortnight. One who expects a northern Christmas with the shops open has a strange one.
The 25th itself
- Shops are closed by law on Christmas Day, with a few exemptions for dairies, petrol stations and pharmacies. Supermarkets are shut.
- Most restaurants close. The ones that open, mostly in hotels, charge a public holiday surcharge and want a booking made weeks ahead.
- The scenic trains do not run. The Northern Explorer pauses from 25 December to 11 January, and the Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine skip Christmas Day.
- The ferries and airlines run reduced timetables. Attractions are a mix: the Milford cruises and most Queenstown activities run, while Hobbiton and most museums close for the day.
On Christmas Day, be somewhere with a kitchen, a lodge with a lunch, or a city hotel, and do not plan to drive far. Boxing Day everything reopens and the country goes to the beach.
The fortnight, played well
The school year ends by 18 December and the summer holiday runs to the end of January, with Australian holidays overlapping. From the 19th the beach towns triple in population, the holiday parks are full, the Interislander’s car decks are sold, and the Milford road is at its busiest. The trick is to go where New Zealanders do not go at Christmas: the West Coast, Fiordland, the Catlins and the high country are all quieter than the coasts, because the locals are at the beach.
- Book five to six months out: the ferry first, then Te Anau, Franz Josef and Mount Cook village, then the rest.
- Hold three-night stays over the 24th to 26th, so the closed day is a rest day rather than a moving day.
- Put the beach days before the 19th or after the 10th of January if the dates can move at all.
- Carry a chilly bin. The supermarket closes on the 25th and the good bakeries close early on the 24th.
A southern-hemisphere Christmas, for northerners
Expect a barbecue rather than a roast, cherries and strawberries rather than chestnuts, a swim before lunch, and a tree that grows on the beach. The pohutukawa flowers from mid-December along the coasts north of about Gisborne and New Plymouth, and it is the crimson on every New Zealand Christmas card. Carols happen in parks in the evening light. Nobody minds a visitor at either.
The sun sets after nine in the south and the UV at midday is among the highest on Earth for the latitude. The two Christmas injuries the country does best are sunburn and jellyfish, and both are avoidable.
The new year
Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the new year, and Rhythm and Vines runs there from 28 to 31 December 2026 for the last time before it moves to a new venue in 2027. Queenstown’s waterfront and Auckland’s Sky Tower have the big displays; every beach town has a small one and a full holiday park. The first week of January is the peak of the peak; the last week is when the pressure comes off.
