New Zealand in December: two different months
December is two months wearing one name. The first eighteen days are early summer with the lupins still out, the Great Walks open, the days at their longest and the prices still shoulder. From 19 December the schools break up, the country goes on holiday with itself, and everything from the ferry to the Milford road runs full until the end of January. Plan them as two different trips.
Early December: the smart play
- The longest days of the year. The solstice is around 21 December and Queenstown stays light until nearly ten.
- The lupins at their peak around Tekapo and Pukaki in the first fortnight.
- Every operator open, every cruise and heli hike running, and beds in Te Anau and Franz Josef still available a few weeks out.
- The pohutukawa in flower along the northern coasts from mid-month, the crimson tree every New Zealand Christmas card is built on.
If you can travel before 19 December, you get summer at spring prices. It is the best fortnight of the year that nobody books.
The Christmas fortnight, plainly
Christmas Day itself is one of the few days the country actually closes: shops shut by law, most restaurants close or charge a surcharge, and the trains do not run. The Northern Explorer pauses from 25 December to 11 January, the Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine skip Christmas Day, and the ferries run a reduced timetable. New Year’s Eve is Gisborne’s. Rhythm and Vines runs from 28 to 31 December 2026 and is the first festival in the world to see in the new year; its organisers have said it moves to a new venue in 2027. Everywhere else, the beach towns have a fireworks display and a full holiday park.

December is warm but not yet hot; the sea reaches 20 in the north by Christmas and the South Island lakes are still cold. Fiordland gets its share of summer rain, which fills the waterfalls, and the UV is at its yearly peak from now until February.
How to book December
- Before the 19th: a few weeks out for most beds, a couple of months for Tekapo in lupin fortnight.
- After the 19th: five to six months out for everything, the ferry first, then Te Anau, Franz Josef and Mount Cook, then the rest.
- Christmas Day: pick a base with a kitchen, a lodge with a Christmas lunch, or a city hotel, and do not plan to drive far.
- New Year: Queenstown, Gisborne and the beach towns are full and loud; the West Coast and Fiordland are the escape.
