New Zealand school holidays: what they do to your trip and your prices
New Zealand schools run four terms, which produces four holiday windows, and because Australian schools break at similar times and Australians are our largest visitor group, those windows hit twice as hard. Whether you are a family who must travel inside them or a couple determined to travel outside them, the calendar below is the planning tool. Dates shift slightly each year (the Ministry of Education publishes them years ahead), so treat the months as fixed and confirm the exact days for your year.

Australian state holidays stagger across similar periods (their summer break runs mid December to late January too, and their July breaks straddle ours), so trans-Tasman pressure roughly doubles the effect in Queenstown and the ski towns. Playing it, both ways
- Travelling WITH children: book the holiday windows four to six months out, prioritise two-night bases (packing daily with kids is nobody’s holiday), and lean on our family itineraries, which are built around short driving days and confirmed family rooms. Inside the windows, attractions run holiday programmes and the country is genuinely set up for you.
- Travelling WITHOUT children: the calendar is your discount card. The first three weeks of December, all of February and March, May, August after the first week, and all of November sit outside every window: softer prices, quieter roads, the same country.
- The transition days: the first and last weekends of each window are the heavy traffic days, especially leaving Auckland and Wellington. Do not plan long drives on them.
- Public holidays stack the effect: Easter, Anzac Day (25 April) and Labour Weekend (late October) create long weekends that behave like mini holiday windows, with surcharges at cafes and full motels in the nearest scenic town.

The ones to know for the year ahead: Labour Day on Monday 26 October 2026, Waitangi Day observed on Monday 8 February 2027, Easter early on 26 to 29 March 2027, Anzac Day observed on Monday 26 April 2027 at the end of the autumn holidays, and Matariki on Friday 25 June 2027. The beach towns fill for Labour weekend and the ski towns for Matariki; the mountains and the coasts are empty on each other’s long weekends.
How the calendar sets the price
The holiday windows do not raise a motel’s price so much as remove its cheap rooms. In the July holidays a Queenstown apartment that costs one figure in June costs double, because the June rate has sold out to families booking in March. The same happens in Rotorua at Easter and in every beach town from 19 December. Book inside the windows four to six months ahead, or travel in the weeks either side of them and pay the shoulder rate for the same room.
