The Catlins: the corner of the country nobody told you about
The Catlins is the forested corner between Dunedin and Invercargill where the Southern Scenic Route earns its name: waterfalls in mossy bush, wildlife hauled out on empty beaches, and the South Island’s southernmost point with a hand-painted sign. It rewards a slow day and a half, punishes tight schedules (the roads are partly gravel and the fuel stops are few), and remains gloriously under-visited because it is on the way to nowhere except itself.
The route, west from Dunedin
- Nugget Point: the lighthouse walk above wave-carved islets is the Catlins’ icon and one of the great coastal viewpoints in the country. Dawn here, with fur seals barking below, opens the day properly.
- Purakaunui Falls: the three-tiered waterfall on every calendar, ten minutes’ walk through beech forest. McLean Falls, further on, is taller and arguably better.
- Cathedral Caves: 30 metre high sea caves walkable at low tide only, through private land with a small access fee, open roughly October to May. Check the tide-based opening hours before committing the detour.
- Surat Bay: New Zealand sea lions, the world’s rarest, loll on the sand here and at Cannibal Bay. Give them ten metres; they are faster than they look and this is their beach.
- Curio Bay: a 180 million year old petrified forest in the tidal platform, with Hector’s dolphins surfing Porpoise Bay next door in summer and yellow-eyed penguins coming ashore at dusk.
- Slope Point: the actual southernmost point of the South Island, a windswept paddock walk to a sign and a sense of edge. The trees here grow sideways, which says everything about the neighbourhood.
- The Lost Gypsy Gallery, Papatowai: a bus and garden of hand-built automata that is the funniest hour on the whole route. Genuinely unmissable, closed some winter days.
Practical truths
Allow a full day minimum, ideally a night in Owaka, Papatowai or Curio Bay. Fill the tank in Balclutha or Invercargill, expect gravel stretches and no phone signal in the valleys, and treat every wildlife encounter by the same rule: distance, patience, no flash. The Catlins slots into the southern leg of a long South Island loop between Dunedin and Fiordland or Stewart Island, and it is precisely the sort of place our longer self drive itineraries exist to protect from being skipped.

The Catlins runs on the tide and the dusk, which is why a day and a half here beats a day. Sleep at Curio Bay or Papatowai, and the penguins and the fossils fall on the same evening.
Where to sleep and where to fill up
Owaka is the only town of size, with fuel and a supermarket, and Papatowai and Curio Bay have the camps and the cabins nearest the animals. Fill the tank in Balclutha coming from Dunedin or in Invercargill coming the other way, and carry the picnic, because the cafes keep country hours and the distances between them are longer than the map suggests. Phone coverage drops for stretches along the coast. Sleep at Curio Bay, fuel at Owaka, and give the drive from Dunedin to Invercargill two days rather than the six hours it says.
