The South Island road trip, stop by stop

The rugged West Coast shoreline near Greymouth

The South Island circuit is the road trip other road trips are measured against: alpine passes, a glacier coast, wine valleys and fiords arranged around one drivable loop. This guide walks the classic anticlockwise circle from Christchurch, stop by stop, with the real hours between them. Take it whole at two weeks, or lift the half that fits your days; the itinerary version restructures the same ground by trip length.

The east and north: whales and wine

  • Christchurch, nights 1 to 2: arrive, acclimatise, eat: the city guide has the evening sorted.
  • Kaikoura, 2.5 hours north, night 3: the mountains fall into a whale-rich sea. Morning whale watch, afternoon seal colony, crayfish from a roadside caravan because that is what Kaikoura means.
  • Marlborough, 2 hours on, night 4: cellar doors by bike at Renwick and the Sounds from Picton: the top of the south guide covers both.
  • Nelson and Abel Tasman, 2 hours west, nights 5 to 6: golden beaches by water taxi and kayak: the park guide explains the perfect day.

The West Coast: rain, ice and pounamu

  • The Buller Gorge and Punakaiki, 3.5 hours, night 7: the Pancake Rocks blowholes perform best around high tide, and the coast road south is the wildest scenery money does not have to buy.
  • Hokitika, 1.5 hours: the pounamu (greenstone) carving town, worth two browsing hours and a driftwood-strewn beach walk.
  • Franz Josef, 2 hours, nights 8 to 9: glacier country: the heli hike question, Lake Matheson’s dawn mirror, and the spare morning that West Coast weather demands.
  • The Haast Pass, 3.5 hours to Wanaka: rainforest narrowing to river gorge opening onto blue lakes. If the trip has one transcendent driving day, this is it.

The south and centre: lakes, fiords, stars

  • Wanaka, nights 10 to 11: the calm lake town and its ten best things, then the Crown Range to its louder sibling.
  • Queenstown, nights 12 to 13: adventure capital duties, Glenorchy’s paradise road, and the worth-doing ranking.
  • Te Anau and Milford Sound, nights 14 to 15: the fiord finale, with the day trip or overnight decision made in advance and a weather morning in hand.
  • The Mackenzie, 3 hours from Queenstown, night 16: Aoraki Mount Cook’s Hooker Valley at dawn, Tekapo’s stars at night, then the easy 3 hours home to Christchurch.

The numbers, plainly

The full loop is about 2,400 km. At our 200 km a day planning rule that is twelve driving days minimum, which is why the two-week version above holds several two-night bases and the ten-day version cuts the northern loop entirely. Petrol for the circuit runs roughly NZ$450 to $600 in a car; the campervan comparison doubles that and changes the accommodation maths. Our packaged versions pre-book every bed and cruise on this exact route, which in February is the difference between the itinerary you planned and the one the vacancy signs planned for you.

The loop is one shape and three lengths. Pick the length, take the corresponding page, and every leg on it carries the same times as this one.
