Lord of the Rings filming locations you can genuinely visit
A note before the pilgrimage: film sets are temporary, and most Middle-earth locations today are beautiful landscapes where something once happened, best appreciated with a guide who can hold the film stills up against the hills. The two exceptions, where the magic is physically present, are Hobbiton and Weta Workshop. Build around those, add the landscapes that move you, and you will have the trip the films deserve. The two anchors
- Hobbiton, Matamata: the Shire set rebuilt permanently for the Hobbit films on the Alexander family farm: 44 hobbit holes, the party tree, and a real ale at the Green Dragon. Tours are guided only and sell out in summer. The evening banquet tours are the superfan version.
- Weta Workshop, Wellington: the workshop that made the swords, armour, prosthetics and miniatures runs tours full of actual props and the people who build such things. Pair it with the Gallipoli exhibition at Te Papa, also Weta-built, for the full effect.
The landscapes, South Island
- Glenorchy and Paradise, 45 minutes from Queenstown: Isengard and Lothlorien country at the head of Lake Wakatipu. The drive alone justifies the morning; jet boat and horse trek tours work the valley properly.
- The Remarkables and Deer Park Heights above Queenstown: the Misty Mountains backdrop and the Rohan refugee route respectively.
- Mount Sunday, mid Canterbury: Edoras. The hall is long gone; the 360 degree setting is untouched and staggering. Day tours run from Christchurch with props for the photos.
- Twizel’s Ben Ohau plains near Mount Cook: the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, filmed with hundreds of extras where merino now graze.
The landscapes, North Island
- Tongariro National Park: Mordor. Ngauruhoe wore the digital flames of Mount Doom, and the Alpine Crossing walks you through the volcanic country beneath it. The summit itself is sacred; admire, do not climb.
- Putangirua Pinnacles, Wairarapa: the Paths of the Dead, an eroded badlands gully walkable in two hours from the car park.
- Mount Victoria, Wellington: the "get off the road" hollow, ten minutes from downtown, which delights people precisely because it is so ordinary a park.
A film route, in days
- Day one: Auckland to Hobbiton, the tour and the Green Dragon, then Rotorua for the night.
- Day two: Tongariro National Park, the Crossing or the Taranaki Falls loop under Ngauruhoe, sleeping at the mountain.
- Day three: Wellington, Weta Workshop, Mount Victoria at dusk, the Putangirua Pinnacles if a car and a spare afternoon allow.
- Day four: fly to Queenstown. The Remarkables and Deer Park Heights from the road, Arrowtown for the Ford.
- Day five: Glenorchy and Paradise by jet boat or horse, with the film stills held up against the mountains.
- Day six: Mount Sunday, the Edoras site, on a long day from Queenstown or a shorter one from Christchurch.
Six days, both islands, and the two places where Middle-earth is physically still standing on days one and three. The 10 day North Island itinerary carries the first half at a gentler pace.
