New Zealand events worth planning a trip around
New Zealand does not do many events at national scale, and the ones it does are worth knowing about twice: once because they are good, and once because they fill every bed in a small town for a weekend. Here is the calendar for the coming year with the dates confirmed as of September 2026, each linked to the event’s own site, and a note on which ones to route through and which to route around.
Summer: December to February

Winter’s events are the mountain and the sky. Everything else is quieter, cheaper and colder, which is its own reason to come.

How events change a booking
A festival in a small New Zealand town does not raise prices so much as remove beds. Hokitika has a few hundred rooms and Wildfoods brings ten thousand people; Queenstown’s marathon weekend is booked by winter. Our rule is to check this list against the route before the beds are held, then either route through the event with its accommodation booked first, or move the town by a day.
