New Zealand in June: the ski fields open and Matariki rises
June is when the South Island changes jobs. The ski fields above Queenstown and Wanaka open in the second week, the town fills with people in boots, and the lakes take on the flat winter light that photographers come for. It is also the month of Matariki, the Maori new year and the newest public holiday, which falls on 25 June in 2027. Prices are low until the July school holidays, and the North Island is quiet, green and mild.
The ski season opens

Matariki
Matariki is the rising of the Pleiades in the winter dawn, which marks the Maori new year, and since 2022 it has been a public holiday on a Friday set by the Maori lunar calendar. It falls on 10 July in 2026 and 25 June in 2027. Cities light up for it, dawn ceremonies run on the coasts and at the observatories, and the Tekapo dark sky reserve is at its darkest. The North Island in June is the gentle option. Rotorua’s geothermal valleys look their best in cold air, the hot pools earn their keep, and Hobbiton has tour slots to spare. Northland stays around 16 degrees and the winter rain comes in bursts between clear days. It is the cheapest month of the year to be in Auckland.
Planning a June trip
- Carry chains on any alpine road from now until October. Queenstown Lakes fines $750 for not fitting them when the sign says so, and the rental desk supplies them on request.
- The Milford road enters avalanche season. It closes for hours or days after big snowfalls, so sleep two nights in Te Anau if Milford is the point.
- Book the ski accommodation for the July school holidays now; June itself is easy.
- Sunset is around five in the south. Plan driving days to finish by four.
The Queenstown Ski Escape is five days with passes and transfers; the Mt Hutt Break Escape is three days from Christchurch for a taster; and Ski Canterbury is a week across the Canterbury fields, which open a little earlier than the southern ones.
Where to be in June
Queenstown and Wanaka once the fields open, and the North Island before. The first fortnight of June is the cheapest time of the year to be in Auckland, Rotorua or the Bay of Islands, with mild days, hot pools and tour slots to spare at Hobbiton and Waitomo. From the second week the South Island ski towns come alive, and Canterbury’s Mt Hutt is often a week ahead of them. Fiordland in June is snow to the water and half the boats, provided the road is open; sleep two nights in Te Anau. The Catlins and the West Coast are for people who like a coast to themselves in a storm.
