A 10 day New Zealand itinerary with kids, at a family pace

The rules, before the route

1. Two hours of driving a day is the target and three is the ceiling, broken in the middle. New Zealand puts a fudge shop, a jet boat or a glowworm cave wherever you need to stop.
2. Three nights where you can. Repacking with children is a tax paid in tears; two long stays beat six towns in nine days on every measure a parent cares about.
3. One headline thing a day, chosen by the kids from a shortlist of two. Everything else, including scenery, becomes negotiable.
4. Book family units early. Motels here are built for families, with kitchenettes, laundry and space, and the genuine two-bedroom units are the first thing to sell out in every town.

I also really don’t think the 5 yr old would enjoy the 13hr round trip to Milford sound.

The loop, day by day

1. Days 1 and 2, Auckland. Land softly. The aquarium at Kelly Tarlton’s, the ferry to Devonport for the beach and the ice cream, Cornwall Park for the sheep. Sleep two nights and do not touch the car on day one.
2. Day 3, Auckland to Waitomo. Two and a half hours south. The glowworm cave boat ride in the afternoon is the one thing on this trip that every age is silent for. Sleep in the village or Otorohanga.
3. Day 4, Waitomo to Rotorua via Hobbiton. An hour and a quarter to Matamata for a morning tour, which goes inside a hobbit hole now, then 45 minutes to Rotorua. Three nights.
4. Day 5, Rotorua. Te Puia for the geyser and the kiwi house, the luge in the afternoon, a hangi and concert in the evening for the older ones.
5. Day 6, Rotorua. The Redwoods treewalk after dark with the lanterns, and the family pools at Polynesian Spa. Or the Agrodome, if there is a lamb-feeder in the party. The Rotorua guide has the full list.
6. Day 7, Rotorua to Hahei. About 2 hours 30 via Tauranga and Whangamata, with a beach stop at Waihi on the way. Two nights on the Coromandel.
7. Day 8, Hahei. Hot Water Beach two hours either side of low tide, with a spade from the cafe, is the best engineering project in the country. Cathedral Cove by boat from Hahei beach rather than the 45 minute cliff walk each way.
8. Day 9, Hahei to Auckland. About 2 hours 45 over the range on the rebuilt highway, with lunch in Thames. A last night near the airport, or in the city if the flight is late.
9. Day 10, fly out. If the flight is in the evening, the morning is the Auckland Zoo or the museum.

Why the North Island, and when the South

The North Island wins for young children on three counts: warmer water, shorter drives, and Rotorua, which is the most child-pleasing town in the country by a distance. A reply on the New Zealand travel subreddit to a family with three children asking where to start put the route in a sentence.

From Auckland you could do a loop down to Waitomo, Taupo, Rotorua, Coromandel, Auckland that has lots of kid friendly activities.

That is this itinerary with Taupo taken out, and Taupo is the first thing to add back if you have twelve days: an hour from Rotorua, with the Huka Falls, the prawn park and a lake to swim in. The South Island is the trip for ages eight and up, when a two hour walk is an adventure rather than a negotiation and the glaciers land. What changed on this route

• The Hobbiton interiors opened in December 2023. Tours run to a timetable, so book the time before the day, especially in the school holidays.
• Car seats are required by law to age seven and every major rental firm supplies them; book them with the car. For under twos, bringing the familiar seat is worth the airline fee for the naps alone. NZTA has the rules.
• The Coromandel highway across the range, State Highway 25A, reopened in December 2023 on a new bridge after a year closed. The Rotorua to Hahei drive in this route uses the coast road and does not need it, but the Auckland leg on day nine does.

School holidays, both sides of the Tasman

The New Zealand school holidays set the prices and the queues, and Australian families should know they largely overlap with their own. The dates that matter for the next year are the spring break from 26 September to 11 October 2026, the summer holiday from 19 December 2026 to the end of January 2027, and the autumn break from 10 April 2027. Hobbiton, the luge and every family motel in Rotorua are full in those weeks.

If the dates are yours to choose, February after the first week, March, and October after the break are the weeks this loop is at its best: warm, open, and half the price of January. The school holidays guide has the full calendar for both countries.

What to leave for later

• Milford Sound. Not because it is not wonderful, but because it is a 12 hour day from Queenstown and a two night detour from anywhere else, and the fiord does not care how old you are. It waits.
• The Tongariro Crossing. Eight hours on an exposed volcano is a teenager’s day, not a seven year old’s.
• The Bay of Islands, unless you have twelve days. It is three hours north of Auckland and pulls the whole loop out of shape; with two extra days it goes in at the start, dolphins and all.
• A different bed every night. The families who sleep in nine towns in ten days are the ones who write to us.
