The Great Walks, ranked by who should actually do them

A guide pointing out forest detail to a walker on a New Zealand track

The Great Walks are the premier league of New Zealand tramping: multi-day tracks with serviced huts, maintained to a standard that makes real backcountry available to ordinary fit people. There are currently eleven, they are not equally great, and the famous ones book out within hours of the season opening. Here is our ranking for a first-time visitor, and the ways to walk the big names without carrying a week on your back.

The ranking, argued

WalkDaysOur take
Milford Track4The famous one, and the label "the finest walk in the world" has survived since 1908 for a reason: glacial valleys, the Mackinnon Pass, Sutherland Falls. Booking is a lottery-day scramble; guided trips with lodges are the reliable route in.
Routeburn2 to 4Our pick for best scenery per step: an alpine traverse linking Fiordland and Mount Aspiring parks. Shorter than Milford and arguably its equal above the bushline.
Kepler3 to 4The connoisseur’s loop from Te Anau: a full day on an open tops ridgeline that pilots would envy. Easier to book than its neighbours.
Abel Tasman Coast3 to 5Beaches, estuaries and the gentlest gradients of the lot. The one to give walkers who want golden sand with their effort: our Abel Tasman guide covers the day-trip versions.
Tongariro Northern Circuit3 to 4Volcanic moonscape around Ngauruhoe, sharing its best day with the Alpine Crossing. Choose it if you cannot get southern bookings.
Paparoa2 to 3Built as a shared walking and mountain biking track: limestone, escarpments and West Coast rainforest. Underrated because it is young.
The restvariesLake Waikaremoana (remote, cultural, superb), Heaphy (long, varied), Rakiura (birdsong on Stewart Island), Hump Ridge (the newest, added in 2024), Whanganui Journey (a canoe trip wearing a walking badge). None are consolation prizes.

The booking truth, and the ways around it

Hut places for Milford, Routeburn and Kepler open on set dates months before the October to April season and the prime slots go in hours, like concert tickets. Three workarounds. First, guided walks: operators hold lodge allocations on Milford and Routeburn, so a guided trip converts a ballot into a booking, adds hot showers and meals, and is the version most of our guests choose: our Milford Track itinerary is built exactly this way. Second, day walks: water taxis and passes let you walk the best single days of several Great Walks unencumbered. Third, the shoulder weeks at each end of the season, when cancellations surface and the tracks are quieter.

Which one is yours

  • First visit, one walk, maximum fame: guided Milford, booked months out.
  • Best alpine scenery for a strong walker: Routeburn, with Kepler as the savvy fallback.
  • Beaches and a gentler gradient: Abel Tasman, any way you slice it.
  • No multi-day appetite at all: the Tongariro Crossing, Hooker Valley at Mount Cook, and Routeburn’s first-day section as a day walk cover the highlight reel.

Guided or independent, in plain terms

The guided walk is not the soft option; it is the same track with a bed at the end, and it is the only way most overseas visitors will ever get a Milford booking. The guided tours collection lists the walking versions with dates, and the Milford Track itinerary is the flagship.

The best single day of each

  • Milford: day three, over Mackinnon Pass, which is why the guided walk is worth it and why the day walk from Milford Sound to Giant Gate Falls is the taste for everyone else.
  • Routeburn: the first day from the Routeburn Shelter to the Falls hut and back, or the Key Summit day walk from the Divide on the Milford Road, ninety minutes to a view of three valleys.
  • Kepler: Luxmore hut and back from the control gates at Te Anau, a full day above the bushline with no booking needed.
  • Abel Tasman: Anchorage to Bark Bay with the water taxi at each end, in sandals if you like.
  • Tongariro: the Crossing itself, which is the Northern Circuit’s best day cut loose.
