Blossom and lupin season in New Zealand: when the flowers peak
The photograph everyone arrives with is the lupins: pink, purple and blue along the shore of Lake Tekapo with the Southern Alps behind. It is real, it lasts about three weeks, and the plant is an introduced weed the region has mixed feelings about. Here is when it happens, when the blossom and the autumn gold happen, and how much to trust any of the dates.

The lupins peak in the first fortnight of December more often than any other window, and they move a week either way with the spring.
The lupin facts
- They are Russell lupins, introduced from the northern hemisphere, and they are classed as a weed in the braided riverbeds because they choke the channels that the endangered birds nest on. The roadsides are tolerated; the riverbeds are sprayed.
- They are self-seeded, so a wet windy spring can flatten a display and a dry warm one can bring it early. No operator can promise them.
- The best stands are along the Tekapo lakefront, the Pukaki shore, the Godley Peaks road and the road to Mount Cook. The church at Tekapo is the crowded spot; ten minutes up the road is not.
- Do not walk into them for the photograph. The roadside verges are soft, the drop to the lake is real, and every December someone needs pulling out.
Autumn is the other pilgrimage
The gold is more reliable than the pink. The poplars, willows and oaks of Central Otago turn from the last week of March and peak in Arrowtown and Wanaka from mid to late April, and the Arrowtown Autumn Festival runs from 15 to 18 April in 2027. Trees turn on temperature rather than seed luck, so the window moves days rather than weeks. April’s guide has the month.
Trips timed to the flowers
The Mount Cook Lily Tour is a fortnight timed to the alpine flowering; the Alpine Icons loop passes Tekapo and Pukaki in the last days, which in late November means through the lupins; and the 9 Day Southern Explorer does the Mackenzie in either season. Book Tekapo for the first fortnight of December a couple of months ahead; the window is known and the town is small.
Photographing the lupins without the crowd
The Church of the Good Shepherd at Tekapo is the photograph everyone takes and the one place the lupins are fenced off from. Ten minutes along the lakefront path, or on the Pukaki shore off the Mount Cook road, the stands are bigger and the people are not there. Early morning gives still water and no wind on the flowers; the evening light comes from behind the alps and flattens the colour. A wide lens from the roadside, not from inside the plants, and a step back from the verge, which is soft. The Godley Peaks road on the eastern shore is the local answer to the question.
