New Zealand hot springs, from the free ones to the fancy ones
Sitting on the boundary of two tectonic plates has its compensations, and the main one is hot water: New Zealand soaks in it from public parks to alpine spa complexes. Here is our ranked tour of the country’s best soaks, the free ones included, and the one genuine safety rule everyone should know before putting their head under.
The ranked soaks
- Polynesian Spa, Rotorua: lakefront pools fed by two different springs, the acidic Priest spring for muscles and the alkaline Rachel spring for skin. The deluxe lakeside pools at dusk are the country’s classic soak.
- Secret Spot, Rotorua: private cedar hot tubs over a stream with craft beer service to the tub. Modern New Zealand at its most sensible.
- Spa Park hot stream, Taupo: the Otumuheke Stream enters the Waikato at bath temperature, free, in a public park. The best zero-dollar experience in the Taupo area.
- Tekapo Springs: tiered pools looking down the turquoise lake to the mountains; winter steam sessions under the dark sky reserve are special.
- Hanmer Springs: the South Island’s alpine spa village, 90 minutes from Christchurch, with a full complex of pools among pines and a proper village around it. The family pick.
- Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools: rainforest tubs built for exactly one purpose: dissolving the glacier day out of your legs while rain does its West Coast thing.
- Hot Water Beach, Coromandel: dig your own spa in the sand within two hours of low tide, where hot springs seep up through the beach. Chaotic, crowded and still magic; spades rent from the cafe.
- Onsen Hot Pools, Queenstown: private cedar tubs with a retracting window over the Shotover canyon. The honeymoon soak.
The one rule, and some etiquette
The rule: keep your head above water in natural, untreated geothermal pools. A rare amoeba that lives in some natural hot water can cause a serious infection if forced up the nose, which is why every natural pool carries the sign. Commercial complexes treat their water; the wild river soaks are for shoulders-down relaxing. Beyond that: swimwear is standard everywhere, sulphur will claim silver jewellery as tribute, and booking the private pools ahead on weekend evenings saves standing damply in a queue.
Hot water on a two-island route
- Coromandel: Hot Water Beach at low tide, spades from the cafe.
- Rotorua: Polynesian Spa for the lake and the sunset, the private tubs at Secret Spot for the beer.
- Taupo: the free stream at Spa Park, then a real soak at the pools by the river.
- Hanmer Springs: the detour north of Christchurch on the way to Kaikoura, or a night on its own.
- Tekapo: the tiered pools under the mountains, and the ice rink beside them in winter.
- Franz Josef: the rainforest pools the evening after the glacier.
- Queenstown: Onsen on the Shotover for the honeymoon, booked a week ahead for a sunset slot.
Every base on the classic loop has a soak within twenty minutes of the bed, which is the best reason to pack swimwear in July.
Winter, which is the season for it
The pools are good in summer and better in winter, when the steam stands up off the water and the air is at freezing. Tekapo Springs after a day on the snow at Roundhill, Hanmer after Mount Lyford, Onsen after Coronet Peak: the ski towns all have a soak paired with them, and the private tubs book out on weekend evenings from June to September. Pack jandals for the walk from the changing room and a hat for the head that stays out of the water.
