Waitomo: which cave is actually worth it?
The short answer: yes, Waitomo is worth stopping for, and the right choice for most first timers is the classic Glowworm Cave boat ride plus Ruakuri if you have the time, or the Black Labyrinth rafting trip if you would rather earn your glowworms wet. The worms are Arachnocampa luminosa, a fungus gnat larva found only in New Zealand, and a cave ceiling full of them is one of the strangest, quietest sights in the country.

What the boat ride is actually like
You walk through the upper cave, cathedral acoustics and all (the chamber has hosted actual concerts), then board a flat boat in the dark. The guide pulls the boat along overhead wires, everyone stops talking without being asked, and the ceiling turns into a blue-green star field. It lasts maybe ten minutes and people remember it for decades. No photography inside the boat cave; the worms outshine every phone anyway.
Fitting Waitomo into a trip
Waitomo sits an easy detour off the Auckland to Rotorua run, and the classic day pairs it with Hobbiton: caves in the morning, movie set in the afternoon, Rotorua by dinner. Every guided coach itinerary we sell on that corridor does some version of it. If you are self driving, book the first tour of the morning and you will share the grotto with a fraction of the midday numbers.
The village itself is tiny: a couple of cafes, a pub, the museum. Sleep in Rotorua, Hamilton or Otorohanga rather than planning a Waitomo evening.
Waitomo or the Coromandel, on a ten day route
On an Auckland to Wellington trip, Waitomo and the Coromandel compete for the same day: both are two and a half hours from Auckland in opposite directions, and ten days holds one of them. In summer take the beach; in winter, or with rain in the forecast, take the cave, which is the same temperature in every season. With children under ten, the cave wins in any month, because the boat under the glowworms is the one thing on the trip every age goes silent for.
