On the road
Auckland to Queenstown: fly, drive, or do both properly

Auckland and Queenstown anchor opposite ends of the tourist country: the arrival city and the alpine finale, 1,000 km apart as the plane flies and about 1,600 as the car and ferry travel. The flight takes under two hours and is one of the world’s more scenic domestic hops. The drive takes the best part of a week done properly, because everything worth stopping for lives along it. The right answer for most trips is the unglamorous one: do the ground journey in one direction and fly the other.
The three options, priced in days
| Option | Time | Plain verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Fly nonstop | Under 2 hours, many daily | Cheap in days, rich in views: clear-day windows over Tongariro and the Alps. The right call for 7 to 10 day trips that want Queenstown’s region done deeply |
| Drive the lot | 5 to 7 days minimum | Rotorua, Tongariro, Wellington, the ferry, Kaikoura, Tekapo: this is not a transfer, it is the itinerary. Superb at two weeks or more |
| Drive south, fly home from Queenstown | The same week, minus the backtrack | The open-jaw pattern nearly all our both-island itineraries use: one-way car hire plus a single domestic fare beats re-driving anything |
| Option | Time | Days it costs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly | 1 h 55 non-stop, more than fifteen a day | Half a day | Every trip under three weeks, in one direction at least |
| Drive and ferry | About 1,600 km with the strait crossing | Six to seven days done properly | Trips of three weeks or more, and people who came for the road |
| Train and ferry | Northern Explorer, the strait, the Coastal Pacific, then the TranzAlpine | Five days, none of them driving | Rail romantics with the calendar to spare |

If you drive: where the week goes
The ground route splits naturally: three North Island days (Rotorua’s geothermal country, Taupo, a Wellington night), the Cook Strait ferry as a half-day scenic cruise, then the South Island’s east-and-centre run through Kaikoura, Christchurch and the Mackenzie lakes to the mountains. Every leg obeys the 200 km rule from our self drive guide, and the one-way hire fee at the end is the best money the trip spends.
The one-way rule
Whichever way you travel between the two, do it once. The itineraries that disappoint are the ones that fly to Queenstown and back to Auckland with a Rotorua detour in the middle, spending two of ten days in transit. Fly into one city and out of the other, hire the car one way, and the country arranges itself in a line from top to bottom with no backtracking. The one-way car fee is the best money a New Zealand trip spends. Every arranged route we run between the two cities is built that way; the two week itinerary is the version with the days filled in.
The stops, if you drive it
- Rotorua, three hours south, for two nights of geothermal country and a cultural evening, with Hobbiton on the way in.
- Taupo and the volcanic plateau, then Wellington for a night and the ferry the next morning, booked before anything else.
- Kaikoura for the whales, or the Coastal Pacific train along the same coast from September to April.
- Christchurch for a night, then Tekapo and Mount Cook, two nights for the Hooker Valley on its new bridge.
- The Lindis Pass to Wanaka, and the Crown Range into Queenstown, an hour and ten with chains carried in winter.
Six nights is the minimum for the ground journey done properly, and every one of them is a place you would have wanted to sleep anyway. The two week itinerary is this list with the days filled in.
